Our review
The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card is the no-annual-fee entry point into the AAdvantage program, aimed at light American Airlines flyers who want to earn miles without committing to a yearly fee. It is the simplest card in Citi's AAdvantage lineup and a reasonable starter card for occasional travelers.
Its appeal is the zero annual fee combined with useful everyday earning: the card rewards eligible American Airlines purchases and grocery-store spending, including grocery delivery, at an elevated rate, and one mile per dollar elsewhere. For a free card, earning miles on groceries is a genuinely practical feature that most cardholders can use.
Importantly, the MileUp earns Loyalty Points on purchases just like Citi's fee-charging AAdvantage cards, so even a no-fee cardholder can make incremental progress toward AAdvantage status. That makes it a low-commitment way to keep a foot in the AAdvantage ecosystem while spending on everyday categories.
The tradeoffs reflect the price. The MileUp does not include a free checked bag, priority boarding, or lounge access, and it charges a foreign transaction fee, so it is not the card to use overseas. Frequent flyers who check bags will quickly outgrow it in favor of the Platinum Select.
For someone who flies American occasionally, wants to earn miles and Loyalty Points on groceries and travel, and refuses to pay an annual fee, the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card is a sensible pick. Regular flyers who value airline perks should move up the lineup.
Why we like it
- No annual fee, making it easy to keep long term.
- Elevated earning on American Airlines purchases and on groceries, including grocery delivery.
- Loyalty Point earning toward AAdvantage status, unusual for a no-fee airline card.
Who it's best for
- Light American Airlines flyers who want to earn miles without an annual fee.
- Everyday spenders who want to earn AAdvantage miles on groceries.
- People testing the AAdvantage program before committing to a fee-charging card.
Welcome bonus
Citi advertises a welcome bonus of AAdvantage miles after you meet a required spend within the first few months; see the estimated value shown above for a sense of the potential worth.
The bonus is unavailable if you received a MileUp bonus within the past 48 months under Citi's 48-month rule, so confirm your eligibility first.
Verify the current offer and spend requirement on Citi's application page before applying.
Using your rewards
AAdvantage miles are best redeemed for flights on American Airlines and its oneworld and partner airlines, with additional options for upgrades and other travel.
As a fixed airline currency, the miles are most valuable to travelers whose routes are served by American and its partners.
Airport lounge access
The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card does not include airport lounge access.
Foreign transaction fees
The AAdvantage MileUp Card charges a foreign transaction fee on purchases made abroad, so it is not a good choice for international spending. Use a no-foreign-fee card overseas instead.
Major credits & annual benefits
The card includes a statement credit on eligible American Airlines inflight food and beverage purchases.
It does not include a free checked bag or priority boarding, which are reserved for the fee-charging AAdvantage cards.
Insurance & protections
As a no-fee card, protections are limited compared with premium products.
Any coverage that applies is governed by the benefits administrator's terms, so pay with the card and review the current guide to benefits before assuming a protection is included.
Fees & tradeoffs
There is no annual fee, which is the card's main draw, but it omits the checked-bag benefit and boarding perks that define the higher-tier AAdvantage cards.
It also charges foreign transaction fees, so it is not suited to international use.
Final verdict
For light American Airlines flyers who want to earn miles and Loyalty Points on groceries and travel without paying a fee, the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card is a solid no-cost starter.
Anyone who checks bags or flies American regularly will get more value from the Platinum Select, and international spenders should carry a no-foreign-fee card instead.
