Our review

The Business Platinum Card from American Express is the issuer's flagship premium business card, pairing extensive airport lounge access with business-oriented statement credits and elevated earning on travel. It carries a premium annual fee aimed at businesses that travel frequently and spend across a range of vendors.

It ranks at the top of the premium business tier because of its lounge network and its credit stack, which is weighted toward business software and services rather than consumer perks. Like its consumer counterpart, it earns flexible Membership Rewards points.

The core value proposition is lounge access, elevated earning on flights and prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel, and a set of recurring business credits that can offset a meaningful share of the fee for the right company.

The credits are fragmented across specific vendors and reset on their own schedules, so realizing full value takes deliberate use. Businesses that will not engage with those credits will find the fee harder to justify.

For travel-heavy businesses that will use the lounge access and business credits, this is one of the strongest premium business cards. Smaller or simpler businesses are usually better served by a lower-fee card.

Why we like it

  • Broad airport lounge access through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select (enrollment required), a set number of Delta Sky Club visits per year when flying Delta, and other partner lounges.
  • Elevated earning on flights and prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel, plus additional earning on select larger business purchases.
  • A stack of business-oriented statement credits spanning technology, hotels, wireless service, and other categories.
  • Flexible Membership Rewards points that transfer to airline and hotel partners.

Who it's best for

  • Businesses whose owners or employees travel frequently and will use lounge access.
  • Companies that spend across the card's business credit partners and will track the credits.
  • Owners who want transferable points from business spending.

Welcome bonus

The current public welcome offer has recently been as high as 300,000 Membership Rewards points after meeting a spending requirement of $20,000 within the first 3 months, though American Express notes welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for a given offer.

The Business Platinum and consumer Platinum are separate products with separate welcome offers, but Amex generally limits offers to once per lifetime per card product. Confirm the exact offer and spend at application, and treat the estimated value shown above as an approximation.

Using your rewards

Membership Rewards points can be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty partners, redeemed for travel through American Express Travel, used as Pay with Points, or redeemed for gift cards and statement credits. The card has also offered a points rebate when redeeming points for flights through American Express Travel with a selected airline; confirm the current terms.

Transfer partners have long included a range of airline programs (such as Delta SkyMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Air France-KLM Flying Blue) and hotel programs (such as Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and Choice Privileges), though the participating list can change, so verify current options before planning a redemption.

For transfers into the frequent flyer program of a U.S. airline, American Express charges a small federal excise tax recovery fee (disclosed as $0.0006 per point, up to a maximum of $99 per transfer).

Airport lounge access

Yes. The card provides access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which includes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select membership (enrollment required), a limited number of Delta Sky Club visits per year when flying Delta, and other select partner lounges. Guesting rules and visit limits vary by network, so review the current terms.

Foreign transaction fees

The Business Platinum Card does not charge foreign transaction fees, which makes it a good option for business purchases made abroad or in a foreign currency.

Major credits & annual benefits

The card carries a set of recurring business statement credits that have included technology purchases with specific vendors, hotel credits, wireless service, airline incidental fees, and other business services. Most require enrollment and reset on annual, quarterly, or monthly schedules, and the specific partners and amounts change periodically.

The card has also provided a statement credit toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. Confirm the current credit lineup in your account before planning around any single credit.

Insurance & protections

American Express markets a range of travel and purchase protections on its premium cards, which can apply when you pay with the card. Coverage is subject to specific terms, limits, and exclusions and should be reviewed in the current benefits guide before you rely on it.

Fees & tradeoffs

The annual fee is high, and the value depends on using the lounge access and the business credits.

The credits are fragmented across specific vendors and reset on different schedules, so businesses that will not track and use them may struggle to justify the fee. Everyday, non-travel earning is also modest.

Final verdict

For travel-heavy businesses that will use the lounge access and business credits, the Business Platinum Card can deliver strong value once the welcome bonus and annual benefits are weighed against the annual fee, broadly reflected in the estimated first-year value shown above.

Smaller businesses or those that will not engage with the credits are usually better served by a lower-fee business card.
