Our review

The Platinum Card from American Express is the issuer's flagship premium travel card, built around a deep bench of airport lounge access, hotel and travel perks, and a long list of monthly and annual statement credits. It carries one of the highest annual fees in the market, and its value depends heavily on how many of those credits a cardholder will actually use.

It ranks near the top of the premium tier because few cards match the breadth of its lounge network or the size of its credit stack. Membership Rewards points earned on the card are also among the most flexible in travel, with the ability to transfer to a wide range of airline and hotel loyalty partners.

The core value proposition is straightforward for the right person: elevated earning on flights and prepaid hotels, a large collection of airport lounges, and enough recurring credits to offset a meaningful share of the annual fee. The catch is that the credits are fragmented across many merchants and reset on monthly, quarterly, or semiannual schedules, so extracting full value takes ongoing effort.

This is not a card that rewards casual, everyday spending. Outside of travel booked the right way, the base earn rate is modest, and the annual fee is only justified by consistent use of the travel benefits and credits.

For frequent travelers who value lounge access and will engage with the credit ecosystem, the Platinum Card can be one of the strongest premium cards available. For everyone else, a lower-fee travel card is usually the better fit.

Why we like it

  • Broad airport lounge access through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select (enrollment required), a set number of Delta Sky Club visits per year when flying Delta, and other partner lounges.
  • Elevated earning on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel and on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel.
  • A large set of recurring statement credits spanning hotels, airline incidental fees, rideshare, dining, digital entertainment, and select retail and wellness partners.
  • Membership Rewards points that can transfer to many airline and hotel partners, often the highest-value way to redeem.

Who it's best for

  • Premium frequent travelers who will regularly use lounge access and the travel credits.
  • Cardholders who are comfortable tracking monthly and semiannual credits to offset the annual fee.
  • Travelers who want flexible transferable points rather than a single airline or hotel currency.

Welcome bonus

The current public welcome offer has recently been as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points after meeting a spending requirement of $12,000 within the first 6 months, though American Express notes that welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for a given offer.

Amex generally limits welcome offers to once per lifetime per card product under its family rules, so prior or current holders of this card may not qualify. Confirm the exact offer, spend, and time window shown at application, and treat the estimated value shown above as an approximation rather than a guaranteed amount.

Using your rewards

Membership Rewards points can be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty partners, redeemed for flights and prepaid hotels through American Express Travel, used as Pay with Points at checkout with participating merchants, or redeemed for gift cards and statement credits.

Transfer partners have long included a mix of airline programs (such as Delta SkyMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, and others) and hotel programs (such as Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and Choice Privileges). The participating partner list can change over time, so verify current partners and transfer ratios before counting on a specific redemption.

For transfers into the frequent flyer program of a U.S. airline, American Express charges a small federal excise tax recovery fee (disclosed as $0.0006 per point, up to a maximum of $99 per transfer).

Airport lounge access

Yes. The card provides access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which includes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select membership (enrollment required), a limited number of Delta Sky Club visits per year when flying Delta, and other select partner lounges. Guesting rules and visit limits vary by lounge network, so review the current terms before relying on access for companions.

Foreign transaction fees

The Platinum Card does not charge foreign transaction fees, which makes it a good option for purchases made abroad or in a foreign currency.

Major credits & annual benefits

Recurring statement credits span several categories, including a semiannual prepaid hotel credit on eligible Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel, an annual airline incidental fee credit with a selected qualifying airline, monthly Uber Cash, a monthly digital entertainment credit, a quarterly dining credit, and select retail and wellness credits. Most require enrollment and reset on fixed monthly, quarterly, or semiannual schedules.

The card also provides a statement credit toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, along with hotel and travel booking benefits. Credit amounts, partners, and enrollment rules change periodically, so confirm the current lineup in your account before planning around any single credit.

Insurance & protections

American Express markets a range of travel and purchase protections on its premium cards, which can include coverage tied to eligible travel booked with the card. Coverage generally requires paying with the card, is subject to specific terms, limits, and exclusions, and should be reviewed in the current benefits guide before you rely on it.

Fees & tradeoffs

The annual fee is high, and the value proposition rests on using enough of the credits and lounge access to justify it.

The biggest tradeoff is complexity: the credits are fragmented across many merchants and reset on different schedules, so cardholders who will not actively track and use them may find the fee hard to justify. The base earn rate outside of travel is also unremarkable.

Final verdict

For premium frequent travelers who will use the lounge access and work the credit stack, the Platinum Card can deliver strong value once the welcome bonus and annual benefits are weighed against the annual fee, roughly reflected in the estimated first-year value shown above.

Travelers who prefer simplicity, spend lightly on travel, or will not engage with the recurring credits are usually better served by a lower-fee travel card.
