Our review
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is the top-tier Hilton co-brand card, and it is built for travelers who stay with Hilton often enough to lean on hotel benefits rather than flexible points. For the right person it can be one of the easiest premium cards to justify, because the recurring credits and the annual free night reward are tied directly to the kind of spending a Hilton loyalist already does.
It earns its place near the top of the Hilton lineup on the strength of two things: automatic top-tier elite status and an annual free night reward with no published points cap. Very few cards hand you the highest published elite tier of a major hotel program simply for holding the card, and fewer still pair it with a free night that can be redeemed at expensive properties where the cash rate dwarfs the annual fee.
The value proposition is straightforward but conditional. If you can use the resort credits, the flight credit, and the free night, the card can return far more than its annual fee. If those credits sit unused because you rarely stay at Hilton resorts or rarely fly, the math gets much tighter and a lower-fee Hilton card may serve you better.
Because the rewards currency here is Hilton Honors points, which tend to be worth relatively little per point, this is not a card to hold for the points alone. Its case rests on status, the free night, and the statement credits rather than on raw earning value.
In short, the Aspire is a benefits card wearing a hotel co-brand badge. It rewards people who are already committed to Hilton and penalizes those who are not.
Why we like it
- Automatic Hilton Honors Diamond status, the program's top published tier, for as long as you hold the card.
- An annual free night reward valid for a standard room at most properties in the Hilton portfolio, with no published points cap, which can be very valuable at high-end resorts.
- Up to $400 per year in Hilton resort credits, split into two semi-annual $200 installments.
- Up to $200 per year in flight credits, issued as up to $50 back each quarter on eligible airfare.
- Strong Hilton earning, at up to 14 points per dollar on eligible Hilton purchases, for people who spend heavily at the brand.
Who it's best for
- Frequent Hilton guests who value automatic Diamond status and will actually redeem the annual free night.
- Travelers who stay at Hilton resorts often enough to use the semi-annual resort credits.
- People who fly at least occasionally and can absorb the quarterly flight credit.
Welcome bonus
American Express has advertised a large Hilton Honors points welcome offer on the Aspire after meeting a minimum spend requirement within the first several months of card membership. The exact points total, spend requirement, and window change over time, so confirm the current terms on the official application page before applying.
Treat the estimated value shown above as a guide rather than a guaranteed cash figure, since Hilton points are worth a variable and generally modest amount per point.
Amex welcome offers are generally limited to once per lifetime per card product, and you may not be eligible if you have or have had this card before.
Using your rewards
This card earns Hilton Honors points, which are best used for Hilton stays. Because Hilton points carry a relatively low per-point value, large balances translate into fewer nights than the raw point total might suggest.
Value tends to be highest when you redeem at properties where the cash rate is high relative to the points required, and when you use Hilton's fifth-night-free benefit on longer award stays.
Hilton points are not a strong transfer currency, so plan to redeem them within the Hilton portfolio rather than expecting airline-style flexibility.
Airport lounge access
This is a hotel card and does not include an airport lounge membership. American Express no longer lists Priority Pass among the Aspire's current benefits.
Foreign transaction fees
The Aspire charges no foreign transaction fees, so it is a reasonable card to use for eligible Hilton spending abroad. Note that some overseas ATMs or merchants may still add their own surcharges.
Major credits & annual benefits
Automatic Hilton Honors Diamond status while you hold the card, which can include room upgrades, on-property benefits, and bonus points on stays where offered.
An annual free night reward, issued in your first year and again each year on renewal, redeemable for a standard room at most Hilton properties.
Up to $400 per year in Hilton resort credits, delivered as up to $200 back in each half of the calendar year on eligible purchases made directly with participating Hilton resorts.
Up to $200 per year in flight credits, issued as up to $50 back each quarter on eligible airfare purchased directly with an airline or through Amex Travel.
A statement credit toward a CLEAR Plus membership, plus the ability to earn additional free night rewards after reaching higher annual spend thresholds. Enrollment is required for several of these benefits, and each credit resets on its own schedule, so they take some effort to use fully.
Insurance & protections
American Express includes a set of travel and purchase protections on the Aspire, which have historically covered areas such as baggage, trip delay or cancellation, car rental, and purchase-related claims.
Coverage amounts, exclusions, and eligibility vary, and benefits are secondary in many cases. Pay for the covered travel or purchase with the card and review the current benefit guide before relying on any protection.
Fees & tradeoffs
The Aspire carries a high annual fee, and the case for the card depends almost entirely on whether you use the recurring credits and the annual free night. Redeem the free night at a pricey resort and use both halves of the resort credit, and the fee can be easily outweighed.
The main tradeoff is fragmentation. The value is spread across resort credits, a flight credit that resets quarterly, and a free night, all of which require you to plan around Hilton and to remember to use each piece before it expires.
If you rarely stay at Hilton resorts or do not fly, much of that value can go unused, which is when a lower-fee Hilton card becomes the smarter choice.
Final verdict
For a committed Hilton guest, the Aspire is one of the more defensible premium hotel cards: automatic top-tier status plus an uncapped annual free night can outweigh the fee on their own, with the resort and flight credits on top.
For everyone else, the fee is hard to justify. If you cannot reliably use the free night and the credits, look to the Surpass or the no-annual-fee Hilton card instead.
